Labuan Bajo private car rates: full price list by car class and route

Private car rates in Labuan Bajo start from about USD 10-17 for a one-way Komodo Airport (LBJ) to town or harbour transfer, and USD 55-85 for a full-day charter (8-10 hours) with an English-speaking driver and fuel included. A Toyota Avanza suits 3-4 guests, an Innova 4-5, and a Hiace minibus 8-10. Every rate below includes driver, fuel, and parking.

What our Labuan Bajo private car rates include

I run early-harbour pickups most mornings, so I price every charter the way I would want it priced myself: one number, no surprises at the end of the trip. Each quote on this page covers the vehicle, a local driver who knows the Flores roads, fuel, and parking at stops. Driver meals are included on day charters, so you never get asked for extra cash at a warung. The only items not bundled in are personal entrance tickets (for example the Cunca Wulang waterfall fee) and any boat or speedboat tickets at the harbour, which are paid separately to the operator.

Prices are quoted in USD for clarity and settled in Indonesian rupiah at the day’s rate. If you would rather pay in rupiah throughout, that is fine. For airport runs, send your flight number when you book so I can track delays and meet you at arrivals with a name board, whatever time you land.

Car classes and passenger capacity

Flores roads are narrow and winding, so the seat count printed on a vehicle is not the same as comfortable capacity with luggage. Here is what each class realistically carries:

Toyota Avanza or Daihatsu Xenia (small MPV)

Comfortable for 3-4 adults with luggage, or 5-6 travelling light. The everyday choice for couples, solo travellers, and small families on airport and town runs. Air-conditioned, 7 seats including the driver.

Toyota Innova, Innova Reborn or Innova Zenix (larger MPV)

Comfortable for 4-5 adults with luggage. More legroom and a stronger engine than the Avanza, which matters on the climbs toward Ruteng and Wae Rebo. The class I recommend for full-day inland trips.

Toyota Hiace (minibus)

Comfortable for 8-10 adults with luggage, up to 12 travelling light. Configured with 12-15 seats. Best for groups, dive crews, and families travelling with gear from the airport to the harbour.

Airport and harbour transfer rates (one-way)

Komodo Airport (code LBJ) sits roughly 4-5 km from the town centre and harbour, a 10-15 minute drive, so airport-to-town and airport-to-harbour transfers cost the same. These are short runs and my fares reflect that, well below the USD 30-35 some walk-up taxis and hotel desks quote.

  • Avanza / Xenia (1-4 guests): from USD 12 one-way
  • Innova / Zenix (1-5 guests): from USD 17 one-way
  • Hiace minibus (up to 10 guests): from USD 28 one-way

If your boat leaves the same morning you land, book the airport-to-harbour run and I will get you dockside with time to spare. For the full route detail and timing, see our Labuan Bajo airport to harbour transfer page. Heading to your accommodation first instead, our airport to hotel transfer page lists the same fares by hotel zone.

Full-day private car charter rates (8-10 hours)

A day charter covers 8-10 hours of use, which is enough for the in-town sights or a return run to one inland destination. Fuel and driver meals are included.

  • Avanza / Xenia: from USD 60 per day
  • Innova / Zenix: from USD 70 per day
  • Hiace minibus: from USD 110 per day

Very early starts, late returns, or long single-day round trips such as Labuan Bajo to Wae Rebo and back push the time well past 10 hours, so those are quoted as extended-day rates. I will tell you upfront if your plan needs one rather than surprise you afterwards.

Day-trip routes and driving times from Labuan Bajo

The most-requested destinations from town, with realistic one-way driving times so you can plan a sensible day:

  • Batu Cermin Cave: 15-20 minutes (about 4-7 km). Easy half-day add-on.
  • Melo Village: 30-40 minutes (about 17-20 km), inland toward Ruteng, with sunset views over the bay.
  • Cunca Wulang Waterfall: 1-1.5 hours each way (about 30-35 km), part on narrow village roads. A comfortable full-day charter.
  • Spider Rice Fields (Lingko Cara, near Cancar): 2.5-3 hours each way (about 65-70 km). Best paired with an Innova for the climb.
  • Ruteng: 3-4 hours each way (about 85-90 km), the standard overland leg.
  • Wae Rebo (Denge trailhead): 4.5-6 hours of driving each way (about 130-140 km via Ruteng), then a 2.5-3 hour hike to the village. Plan this as an overnight, not a single day.
  • Sano Nggoang Lake: 3-4 hours each way (about 70-80 km) on narrow roads.

Rain, construction, and the occasional landslide on interior routes can stretch these times, so I build margin into the schedule rather than rush the mountain bends.

Best time to visit and how it affects your trip

The dry season runs roughly May to October, with July to September the driest and calmest months at sea, which is also peak demand. The wet season runs November to April, with heaviest rain December to March. Car charter base rates stay fairly steady year-round; the real difference in high season is availability, so book your driver a few days ahead in July and August. If your Komodo boat day gets cancelled by weather, a land day to Cunca Wulang or Melo is an easy backup.

Combining transfers with a Komodo trip

Most guests pair their airport transfer with a boat day in Komodo National Park. If you want the whole arrangement handled, including a private phinisi or speedboat and a curated land programme, our partners run luxury Labuan Bajo trips and Komodo charters end to end, while I keep your ground transport tight on either side. It is the smoothest way to land, get to the dock, sail, and get back to your flight without gaps.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private car from Komodo Airport to Labuan Bajo town?

From USD 12 one-way in an Avanza for 1-4 guests, USD 17 in an Innova for up to 5, and USD 28 in a Hiace for up to 10. The drive is 10-15 minutes over roughly 4-5 km. Fares are the same whether you are heading to a hotel or the harbour, since both are in the town area.

What is included in the full-day charter rate?

The vehicle, a local English-speaking driver, fuel, parking at stops, and the driver’s meals. A day covers 8-10 hours of use. Personal entrance tickets and any boat tickets are paid separately. Avanza day charters start from USD 60, Innova from USD 70, and Hiace from USD 110.

How many people fit in each car class?

An Avanza is comfortable for 3-4 adults with luggage, an Innova for 4-5, and a Hiace minibus for 8-10. On Flores’s winding roads I price for comfort plus luggage rather than the maximum seat count, so you are not crammed in for a long inland day.

Can I do Wae Rebo as a day trip by car?

It is possible but hard. The drive is 4.5-6 hours each way via Ruteng, then a 2.5-3 hour hike to the village. I recommend an overnight so you are not driving mountain roads exhausted in the dark. An Innova-class car with a strong engine is the right choice for this route.

Do I pay in USD or rupiah, and when?

Rates are quoted in USD for clarity and settled in Indonesian rupiah at the day’s exchange rate, or in USD if you prefer. Payment is on the day of service. For more booking details and policies, see our Labuan Bajo transfer FAQ, and the Labuan Bajo airport guide for arrival logistics.
